Rumours have been flying here, there and everywhere the last few months as fans eagerly awaited the UK’s 2023 artist & song. After Sam Ryder stormed to 2nd place in 2022 with ‘Space Man’ and the BBC’s commitment alongside collaborators TaP Music to continue the countries newfound success, all eyes were on the UK to see who would be flying the flag this year on home soil.

After an agonising wait, on Thursday March 9th, the BBC announced rising star Mae Muller as the 2023 UK entrant, with her aptly named song – ‘I Wrote A Song’.

So, let’s get to know more about Mae!

Who Is Mae Muller?

Holly Mae Muller – who goes just by her middle and last name artistically – is a 25 year old singer-songwriter who focuses mainly on R&B and Pop music. She was born on August 26th 1997, and is from Kentish Town, Camden, London.

Fun fact: Although you may not have immediately recognised her, Mae starred in MIKA’s music video for his hit song ‘Grace Kelly’ when she was 9 years old!

Early Career

Mae’s first love was creative writing – which led her down the path to song writing, pursuing music whilst she was at college. Inspired by Lily Allen, Gwen Stefani and Florence Welch, she wrote her first song at age 19 and started uploading songs onto SoundCloud in 2017, signing to Capitol Records after posting a video singing on Instagram in the same year. She made her debut in 2018 with the single ‘Close’, and the EP ‘After Hours’, soon following that up with her second EP ‘Frankly’. In 2019, she released her debut album ‘Chapter 1’ which included minor hits ‘Leave It Out’ and ‘Anticlimax’.

After the release of her album, Mae was selected to support Little Mix on their LM5 Tour in 2019, where she picked up a legion of fans along the way with her relatable songs, image and stage presence – leading to her first UK tour and third EP ‘No One Else’ – including the single ‘Therapist’, which she performed prior to its release in 2019 on the Little Mix tour.

She spoke about her songwriting process ahead of the release of her 3rd EP, saying:

Obviously a lot of my songs are based on personal experiences, but I asked so often, who is this song about now? And I’m like, you’re putting the whole narrative around other people: this isn’t actually about anyone else – this is about me and my feelings.

The 2020’s

In Summer 2020, Mae went on the festival circuit, performing sets at Reading & Leeds, Bestival, Latitude and Sundown Festival. Mae saw her first big success commercially in 2021 when she featured on the NEIKED song ‘Better Days’ alongside Polo G, which currently has 378 million streams on Spotify. This scored her first chart hit, reaching #32 in the UK, and #23 in the USA. The song is certified silver in the UK, and platinum in the USA and Australia.

This marked Mae’s transition from low-key R&B tracks to a more dance-pop sound, with the Marshmello & Trippie Red collaboration ‘American Psycho’ and solo single ‘I Just Came To Dance’ both being released in 2022. She kicked off 2023 alongside Sigala, Caity Baser and Stefflon Don on the single ‘Feels This Good’.
