On the 8th of December 2022, the Slovenian Eurovision broadcaster, RTVSLO, announced the band Joke Out will represent the country at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool. But who are the band that describe their music as “shagadelic rock’n’roll”? Let’s take a further look at one of Slovenia’s most successful artists.
Who Are Joker Out?
Bojan Cvjetićanin (vocalist), Kris Guštin, Jan Peteh (guitar) Nace Jordan (bas) and Jure Maček (drums) are the five members that make up Joke Out, an award winning indie pop band from Ljubljiana. To date they have released two full length albums, gaining huge commercial success domestically. In 2021 and 2022, they won “Performer Of The Year” at the Zlatih Piščali Awards in their home country which will give them huge confidence heading to the Eurovision stage.
Music Style
Many Joker Out tracks present an indie flair, but it’s fair to say their music has many layers than just indie pop. In their back catalogue, the band explore a range of emotions especially – such as “Demoni” showcasing a darker undertone to their music whereas “Umazane misli” is dominated happy-go-lucky indie guitar sounds. There are many avenues they could take for their Eurovision song.
When speaking to Eurovision.tv about their selection, the band had this to say about their music and their song for the contest:
“Regarding the style of music present at the Eurovision Song Contest – we need to say that it is well past being defined or limited to just one genre. We are staying true to our distinctive Joker Out sound, no matter where and when we perform.”
