After winning MESC, Miriana Conte will represent Malta in Eurovision 2025 with the song ‘Kant’ (Singing). In this article, we look at her career, her previous attempts at representing her nation, and how her song has already made waves across Europe and beyond.
Early Career and First Eurovision Attempts
Born in 2001, Miriana Conte is a Maltese/Italian singer. Ever since an early age, it’s been a dream of Miriana’s to sing and perform. She first started her singing career back in 2016 where she was revealed as one of the sixteen acts competing in MESC (Malta Eurovision Song Contest) 2017 where the winner would represent the country at Eurovision. She took part with her song ‘Don’t Look Down’. Unfortunately, she finished in last place, but she took part the following year with her song ‘Rocket’ and did a little better finishing in 12th place.
The X Factor
After her first MESC appearances, she decided to take part in the first series of X Factor Malta where the winner would represent Malta in Eurovision. She received enough yesses to advance to the next round. At Bootcamp, she was put in a group with three other singers and they were known as 4th Line. They made it all the way to the live shows, finishing in 9th place.
She left the band the following year and ultimately took part in X Factor again as a solo artist, but was less successful that time around. That same year, she was even invited alongside other Maltese artists to sing the official theme song of Maltese Pride Week called ‘Roll The Dice.’
MESC 2022 and 2024
Over time, she began to achieve more recognition as a singer, and after a few years break, she made her return to MESC 2022 with the song ‘Look What You’ve Done Now’ and finished in a much better 6th place. Two years later, she took part once again with her song ‘Venom‘ and made it to the final where like all of the other finalists, she was able to film a professional music video for her song. She finished in 9th place, but more Eurofans were becoming familiar with her and her music and she was gaining more and more fans each time.
MESC 2025
On December 12th 2024, Miriana Conte was revealed as one of the 24 acts who would compete in MESC 2025. Later that day 10 second snippets of each song were revealed and instantly Miriana’s song ‘Kant’ made a huge impression and got the Eurovision sphere talking. The song was also a really catchy pop number which showed off her impressive vocal abilities, but it was the lyrics that raised some eyebrows. ‘Kant’ is the Maltese word for ‘Singing’ and she exclaims that she’s ‘serving Kant’, a double-entendre which sounds like “serving c**t” which is an expression more commonly associated with the LGBTQ+ community to suggest someone who is bold and confident, but the second word is also an explicit swear in the UK especially.
The song became a fan favourite, and the excitement reached fever pitch in anticipation of her MESC Semi-Final performance which featured costume changes, exercise balls and dancers dressed in ‘The Sound Of Music’ inspired attire. This was a reference to the do-re-mi song which features in the film and features in the chorus of ‘Kant’.
Her performance was enough to qualify for the final and she eventually won the competition finishing 2nd with the juries and finishing 1st in the televote, winning the hearts of the Maltese public to win overall with 182 points.
The morning after she won the contest, Miriana was tragically involved in a car crash and was hospitalised, but thankfully, she wasn’t injured. Despite the traumatic incident, Miriana was in good spirits and in an Instagram post, she was filmed in the hospital jokingly saying ‘Diva Down!’ We are very happy and relieved to hear that she is doing a lot better now.
In that same Instagram post, she thanked her fans, her creative team and said:
“What a surreal 48 hoursโฆ Winning the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2025 and then being in a car accident and ending up hospitalised. It still hasnโt all fully sunk in.
This journey has been an emotional rollercoaster – teaching me discipline, perseverance, and resilience. Against all odds, every doubt, every horrible comment, every criticism I faced.. I can proudly say that I made it. KANT wouldnโt have been possible without every single one of you that believed in us, our vision and what this song can bring to this little island whom we are so proud of.
Controversial song? Maybe.
Bold outfit? Possibly.
But we did it.
This win is for MALTA. Letโs serve KANT in Basel!”
Viral Success
As soon as she won the contest, social media exploded and a TikTok from Eurovision’s official account received millions of views in just a matter of hours. ‘Kant’ went straight to Number 1 in Malta and appeared in numerous Spotify Viral 50 charts such as Finland, Greece, Estonia, and Norway, as well as clips of her MESC performance being featured on news channels such as the UK’s Good Morning Britain on ITV.
There was minor controversy when BBC Radio 2 Presenter Scott Mills said that they “couldn’t mention or play anything of Malta at all.” This was likely due to how close phonetically the word ‘Kant’ sounds to that aforementioned expletive.
It was announced on the 4th March 2025 that the EBU has decided against using the word ‘Kant’ in Eurovision. However Miriana has said on her Instagram post that the “show will still go on – Diva NOT down”. It is currently unknown how the song will be altered for Eurovision, but we will be the first to let you know, once that information has been revealed.
However, despite this, the song has been shared and praised by other Eurovision 2025 acts such as Erika Vikman from Finland and the band Ziferblat from Ukraine. At the time of writing, the song has over 1,500,000 streams on Spotify which for a Maltese artist is huge so she has already done Malta proud!
She has also been climbing up the Eurovision 2025 odds as well, peaking at the Number 7 favourite to win Eurovision!
Malta will be performing in the second half of Semi-Final 2 on Thursday 15th May. Malta haven’t had the best luck in Eurovision recently failing to qualify for the final since 2021. Will Miriana Conte be able to reverse Malta’s Eurovision fortunes and ‘serve Kant’ in Basel?
We wish Miriana and the Maltese delegation the best of luck for Eurovision 2025!
What do you think of her song? Do you think she will bring Malta back to the Eurovision final?
