Norway became the first Scandinavian country to select their artist and song for Eurovision 2025 – with Kyle Alessandro winning Melodi Grand Prix 2025 with ‘Lighter’.
Read on to learn more about Kyle and his career so far…
Who Is Kyle Alessandro?
One of this year’s youngest contestants, 18-year-old Kyle Alessandro Helgesen Villalobos was born in Levanger & raised in Steinkjer, Norway in 2006 to a Spanish father and Norwegian mother.
Career Beginnings & MGP 2023
Kyle took part in Norske Talenter at age 10 in 2017 – beginning his singing career with the singles ‘Din Sang’ and ‘Boomerang’ from his debut album ‘Første Kapittel’.
He continued to release solo music up to 2023, when he, alongside Kristian Haux and Magnus Winjum, joined the project Umami Tsunami. The project was created the year prior by songwriters, producers, vocalists and design professionals that collaborate to create music that’s influenced by both the Western world and Eastern world – with K-pop elements most notably running through their music. The trio entered Melodi Grand Prix 2023 with ‘Geronimo’, making it all the way to the final. Kyle remained as part of Umami Tsunami whilst releasing his own music – including his 2023 solo album ‘Evig & Alltid’. The group’s latest release was with Kyle & Kristian on ‘Loyal’ in March 2024.
MGP 2025
In January 2025, Kyle was announced as one of 9 artists taking part in Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix. Changing to a single show for the 2025 contest, Kyle was up against strong competition – including former MGP winners Wig Wam and Eurovision 1985 winners Bobbysocks. His song ‘Lighter’ is written by himself and Melodifestivalen 2023 and 2024 contestant and singer Adam Woods. Kyle told the Building Bridges podcast that he wanted to “mix everything I love about Eurovision into one song’, using ‘Fairytale’, ‘SloMo’, ‘Zári’ and ‘La Noia’ as influences. ‘Lighter’ is also inspired by his mother’s battle with cancer, and talks about finding the light in the darkness. The performance featured a lot of choreography and some strong vocals – seeing Kyle win the jury, televote and, therefore, the entire show with a combined score of 307 points.
Eurovision 2025
At Eurovision 2025, Norway will perform in the second half of Semi Final 1 on May 13th 2025. With a qualfication streak of 7, Norway, along with Ukraine and Sweden, is currently the 3rd most successful country when it comes to qualifying in Eurovision – so they’ll be hoping Kyle makes it their 8th consecutive appearance in the Grand Final.
We wish Kyle & Norway the best of luck in Basel!
