Spain became the first Big 5 country to decide their Eurovision 2025 entry on February 1st 2025 during Benidorm Fest, with Melody coming out on top with ‘Esa Diva’.

Read on to find out more about Melody and her song!

Who is Melody?

Melodía Ruiz Gutiérrez was born in Dos Hermanas, Spain on October 12th 1990. Her father was a musician in fiesta band Los Quillos, and she had dreams of becoming a singer as a child. Her father sent a tape of her singing to producer El Fary, and at age 10 her music career began.

Childhood Career

El Fary wanted Melody to record an album, and to promote it she released ‘El baile del gorila’ in June 2001. It became a huge hit, reaching #2 on the Spanish charts, and two weeks later her debut album ‘De pata negra‘ was released – selling over 600,000 copies and becoming certified Platinum in the United States, Venezuela, Spain and Colombia. It was also nominated for a Latin Grammy for ‘Best Children’s Album’, and for a Billboard Latin Music Award in 2003.

In 2002 she released her second album ‘Muévete’, followed by ‘T.Q.M’ in 2003 – which produced the hit single and soundtrack of Brazilian soap opera Mulheres Apaixonadas ‘Dabadabadá’. In 2004, she shifted towards a more teen pop sound for the album ‘Melodía’.

She decided to step away from the industry in 2005 to focus on school and growing up away from the fame of her childhood and early teen years. Her disappearance from the scene sparked multiple conspiracy theories – one of the most popular at the time being that she had died – but this was cleared up when Melody returned to music in 2008 with the album ‘Los buenos días

Eurovisión 2009: El retorno

In 2009, Spain hosted a 30 song national titled Eurovisión 2009: El retorno, of which Melody was apart of. She competed with Los Vivancos, entering the song ‘Amante de la luna’, breezing through semi final 1. Los Vivancos withdrew before the final – leaving Melody to go it alone – and in the end she drew with Soraya on 22 points. Melody received 12 from the jury and 10 from the public, whereas Soraya received 10 from the jury and 12 from the public. Due to the tiebreak rules siding with the televote, Soraya was crowned the winner with ‘La noche es para mi’, coming 24th in the Eurovision final.

2010s

In 2013, Melody came 2nd on a charity version of celebrity impersonation show Tu cara me suena, and took part in the full series later that year – again, coming 2nd. She then released her fifth – and to date final – album ‘Mucho camino por andar’ in 2014. A year later she made her acting debut in It’s Now Or Never, and formed a musical duo with her brother called Melek 2.

Benidorm Fest 2025

On November 12th 2024, Melody was revealed as one of 16 artists taking part in Benidorm Fest 2025 – with her entry ‘Esa Diva’ being released a month later. A clear favourite from the beginning, Melody was the last to perform in the 2nd Semi Final, and despite technical and vocal issues she sailed through to the final two days later. Despite tough competition from Daniela Blasco and J Kbello, Melody – who again performed last – nailed her performance and ended up 3rd in the jury, just one point behind Daniela and 4 points behind J Kbello. The close race was eventually won by Melody, who stormed to victory with a win in the televote, putting her 9 points ahead of Daniela in 2nd, making Melody the winner of Benidorm Fest 2025. RTVE revealed after the show that she received 39% of the overall televote in the final.

Eurovision 2025

Melody is part of the Big 5 as Spain’s representative, so will go straight into the final alongside the other Big 5 entries (France, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom and host country Switzerland). After a change in 2024 that meant the Big 5 now perform live and in full in between semi-finalists, viewers at home will be able to catch Melody’s first performance at the contest during Semi Final 1 on May 13th 2025, and can see her in the Grand Final on May 17th 2025.

We wish Melody & Spain the best of luck for this years contest!
