Who is Slimane?
Slimane Nebchi, who simply uses his first name in music, was born in Chelles, Seine-et-Marne, France in 1989.
Before he rose to fame in 2016, he began uploading original music online, both solo and in a duo with Princesse Sofia. He also competed in Nouvelle Star 2009, The X Factor 2011, Encore une chance 2012 and season 2 of Je veux signer chez AZ.
The Voice 2016
Slimane became known to the French public after auditioning for The Voice: La plus belle voix 2016, joining Florent Pagny’s team. He won the contest, kickstarting his career in France, Belgium and Switzerland, where his debut album ‘À bout de rêves’ reached #1, and is currently certified 3x Platinum in his home country.
Career So Far
Slimane achieved a number 1 single in 2018 as a featured artist on ‘Bella Ciao’, alongside Naestro, Maître Gims, Vitaa and Dadju. His album ‘Solune’, released the same year, reached #2 in France, and #1 in Belgium and Switzerland. The following year, his joint album with Vitaa – ‘VersuS’ – became his most successful release to date, selling over 1 million copies in France alone, becoming certified 2X Diamond. His fourth album ‘Chroniques d’un Cupidon’ was released in 2022.
Eurovision 2024
If you’re a Eurovision fan, chances are you too were taken a little by surprise by France’s early release of their song for Eurovision 2024.
On November 8th 2023, ‘Mon Amour’ was premiered on French television via a recorded, yet live vocal performance by Slimane. The song is a huge ballad, and whilst not knowing at the time, has turned out to be a potential stand out in this years contest amongst so many upbeat, fast-tempo entries. Naturally, the response to ‘Mon Amour’ has shifted since its release and since the class of 2024 became complete – a risk that always arises when releasing a song so early in its complete form. Despite this, Slimane has found a new way to impress fans of the contest – first at Dora 2024, where he paused the music, stepped back from the mic and sang the final chorus a capella, demonstrating his powerful voice and vocal control. He continued to do this trick both on TV in France and at preparties – switching the language of the chorus to Spanish and English in Barcelona and London. Whether this will be the case at Eurovision is yet to be seen, but in a year lacking those usual jury-bait ballads, France should be relatively confident Slimane will deliver no matter how he chooses to approach his 2024 performance.
As a member of the Big 5, France will not compete in the semi finals – however, we will be seeing them in Semi Final 2. In a change to the way the Big 5’s entries are displayed, these countries and host Sweden will be slotted in between the semi-finalists to sing their entries in full. France will perform after Czechia (Aiko – ‘Pedestal) and before Austria (Kaleen – ‘We Will Rave’).
