Having been selected by broadcaster TVP to represent Poland at Eurovision, LUNA‘s song ‘The Tower’s is now the third internally selected song in the contest. Read on to learn more about LUNA, her career and how ‘The Tower’ might fare in Malmö.
Who is LUNA?
Aleksandra Katarzyna Wielgomas, known professionally as LUNA, is a 24-year-old singer and musician who was born in Warsaw. Highly musical from a young age, she plays the piano and violin and has been performing in choirs and operas with the Grand Theatre in Warsaw since 2010.
LUNA initially started releasing music under the name Ola Wiegolmas, starting with her 2018 debut single ‘Na wzgórzach niepokoju’ (‘On the Hills of Anxiety’) which was composed by Marcin Nierubiec, who has written songs for a number of Polish singers. The song enjoyed radio play in Poland and led to the artist performing at a number of festivals. She released her follow-up single ‘Zastyga’ (‘Solidifies’) in 2019.
In 2020, the singer began working with the composer MichaÅ‚ “Fox” Król and started to develop the artistic persona LUNA. She chose this name because she claims the moon has a great influence on her life and represents her light and dark sides as an artist. In keeping with this, LUNA began moving towards a sound she describes as ‘cosmic pop’ with her 2020 single ‘ZgaÅ›’ (‘Turn Off’) even including sounds from space published by NASA!
In 2022, LUNA released her debut album ‘Nocne Zmory’ (‘Nightmares’).
‘The Tower’ and the Journey to Eurovision
In October 2023, Poland announced they were moving away from a national final format and internally selecting a representative due to controversies surrounding the selection of Blanka last year, with allegations the contest had been rigged in her favour. While TVP continued to deny these allegations, they confirmed again in January 2024 that they would be selecting internally. A number of Polish artists submitted entries, including 1994 and 1995 Eurovision representatives Edyta Górniak and Justyna Steczkowska. A five person jury rated each song on a scale of 1-10 with LUNA’s song ‘The Tower’ receiving the highest score.
Poland are scheduled to perform in the first half of the first semi-final on Tuesday 7th May. They may benefit from diaspora voting, with Ireland, Lithuania and the United Kingdom all being able to vote in this semi. However, with no clear ideas on how ‘The Tower’ will be staged and with a number of other songs still yet to be announced anything could happen.
