This super Saturday sees the return of the aptly named Supernova. Out of 108 submissions, 15 entries were selected to participate in Saturday’s semi final, where 10 finalists will be chosen to compete for the chance to represent Latvia in Malmö in May. For the full list of participating semi-finalists, take a look below:
Agnese Rakovska – ’AI’
The only Eurovision alumni from this year’s returning artists, Agnese Rakovska, better known as the founder and lead singer of the band Triana Park, will be competing in Supernova this year with the song ’AI’. Having competed at Eurovision 2017 with Triana Park and their song ’Line’, Agnese Rakovska will be hoping that the topical ’AI’ will be her ticket to Malmö in May, giving her the opportunity to improve on Triana Park’s result and take Latvia to the final.
Dons – ’Hollow’
Dons is another name in this years Supernova lineup that may be familiar to fans of the Latvian selection process, as someone who has not only previously competed to represent the country back in 2014, but was also a judge on the 2015 and 2017 editions of Supernova. Dons’ entry this year, ’Hollow’, is a Hozier-esque pop ballad that has already proven popular amongst fans.
Katrīna Gupalo – ’The Cat’s Song’
Another Supernova returnee in tonight’s lineup, KatrÄ«na Gupalo will take to the stage with ’The Cat’s Song’. The Ukrainian-Latvian singer previously took part in Supernova 2018 as part of Katrina Gupalo & the Black Birds with the song ’Intoxicating Caramel’. However, they did not make it through to the final. KatrÄ«na will be hoping to improve on this with ’The Cat’s Song’, a song narrating a day in the life of a cat.
St Levića – ’Tick Tock’
St Levića is one of the many names in this year’s lineup that may seem unfamiliar to Supernova viewers. However, they are not new to the Supernova stage: lead singer Santa Danelevica participated in the 2017 edition of Supernova, placing 4th in the final. The lyrics of the Latvian music project’s dark pop song ’Tick Tock’ serve to remind listeners that time is not infinite and to make the most of the time we have.
Vēstulēs – ’kur?’
VÄ“stulÄ“s are another first-time Supernova entrant, with their song ’kur?’. The duo, made up of Brian Martinson and Marta Krampe, have been friends since school, with a shared love of music bringing the two together to perform. The song, ’kur?’, talking about the feeling of loneliness and how this can be overlooked by people on the outside, is the only song in Latvian within this year’s selection, allowing it to stand out amongst the 14 other competitors this evening.
Other acts to keep an eye out for this evening include Supernova alumni Alekss Silvers and AVÉI, who will both be hoping to improve on their previous Supernova appearances, and debutant ECTO, who brings an alternative, genre-defying track to the Supernova stage.
LTV have confirmed the running order for the semi-final will be the following:
